Penallta Park & Parc Cwm Darran 24/07/2016

Weather not perfect for Dragon hunting but gave it a go. At Penallta I found a couple of female Common Darters and a few Blue-tailed Damsels and nothing else so moved onto PCD where I could only find Azure Damsels before the rain set in.

Hope the weather improves.

Barry Sidings & Gelliwion Forestry, Hopkinstown. 22/07/2016

Last Friday I spent a couple of hours at a local pool looking for dragons but there were only damsels to be found, Blue-tailed, Large Red, Azure and Common Blues. Walking around the forestry I did find one dragon a lone male Golden Ringed, then by a couple of small pools a few male Common Darters and male Black-tailed Skimmers.

Forest Farm canal

Short walk along the canal yesterday morning - lots of Azure Damsels, some in tandem but no other damsels seen. Did see a very nice Golden-ringed Dragonfly and also a couple of Common Darters - apologies for the quality of the photographs, I only had a macro lens with me so the images have been severely cropped.

Lavernock NR, Cosmeston Lakes & Llanerch Wood. 17/07/2016

Started off at Lavernock but not alot happening untill mid day when the weather warmed up and the Dragons started to show. At the pool a male Emperor was patroling with a female Emperor ovipositing on the water, a male Broad-bodied Chaser was on a stem near by and a female Common Darter resting on a reed stem. A pair of Common Darters were in tandem with the female ovipositing.

I then moved on ton Cosmeston where at the pool to the left of the visitors centre a male Emperor was patroling with Two female Emperors ovipositing on the pool below, apart from a couple of Blue-tailed Damsels nothing else was present. Walking around the park I did find a female Common Darter in a field and a male Common Darter by the large Dragonfly pond, on the way back to the car I found a Black-tailed Skimmer on the boardwalk in front of the cafe.

Then on to Llanerch wood where the only things seen around the pools were Blue-tailed Damsels and a male Black-tailed Skimmer was found in the car park.

Roath Park & Forest Farm 08/07/2016

Took a walk around Roath Park on Friday and checked out the lily pads near the bridge below the dam, only Azure damsels seen but plenty of them.

There were also plenty of Azure and Common Blues on the side vegetation at the top of the lake.

In the wild wood area there were only Common Blues to be found.

Whats worrying not a single Dragon was seen but it got worse, at Forest Farm I did not see a single Damselfly or Dragonfly on or near the canal or the two ponds!!

Penallta & Parc Cwm Darran 03/07/2016

A few Dragonfly at the horse-shoe ponds at Penallta, a male Emperor patrolling a pool with a female Emperor ovipositing, also a male Broad-bodied Chaser on the same pool.

On the next pool were two female Four-spotted Chasers

There were a few Damsels about, Blue-tailed and Large Reds

Then onto PCD where they have dug out another pool next to the other two pools where again a male Emperor was patroling and a female Emperor was ovipositing, on the new pool two Broad-bodied Chasers were fighting over control. In the bank vegetation I found a male Keeled Skimmer.

There were also Damselflies here Large Reds some in tandem, Blue-tailed and Azure.
